CHARMAN PRIZE PRESS RELEASE 2013

The Charman Prize is an annual art prize, which was established in 2008 with the opening of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. It is open to all artists who have resided on the island for six months and Bermudian artists who now reside overseas.

Patron and sponsor is local businessman and art collector John Charman who stated ”It gives me great satisfaction to sponsor the 6th annual Charman Prize dedicated to the visual arts in Bermuda.Over the years I have watched the talents of our artists flourish and new talents emerge. However, the most gratifying aspect of the Charman Prize for me is to see such a broad cross-section of the art community come together to celebrate the “state of the arts on the island”.

Thanks to Mr. Charman’s generosity, the competition awards prizes to confer tangible recognition of excellence as well as an opportunity to display the extraordinary range of artistic talent that exists in Bermuda.

The grand prizewinner receives $10,000 for an artwork that embodies an outstanding example of the judging criteria, which will be stated on the entry form. Four additional prizes of $2,500 are awarded to excellent examples of each of the four criteria, as well as 12 honorable-mention prizes of $100.00 each. A new Prize for this year is The Masterworks Collection Prize; members of the Masterworks Collection Committee will choose and purchase one piece to accession into the Masterworks Collection.

The theme for this years’ competition is “Art in Bermuda; Bermuda in Art” and will be judged by a panel of three overseas art professionals.

THE CHARMAN PRIZE 2012 WINNERS

Sponsor and Patron of the Charman Prize Mr John Charman announced Molly Godet as this year’s $10,000 Charman Prize Winner at the opening reception, Friday, October 12th, 2012 at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.  Mr Charman states, “ My philanthropic pursuit is driven by a desire to build a platform for our community’s artistic expression. In our fifth year of the Charman Prize, we can see Bermuda’s soul mirrored in Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art”.

Competing with 78 entrants, Ms Godet’s entry, a watercolour piece entitled “Green Man Gombey” depicts a palm tree that Molly Godet interprets as a gombey. The piece was chosen for being an outstanding example of the competition’s four judging criteria; Design and Composition – fine use of the principles and elements of design and composition; Use of Material —technical mastery and skill in a chosen medium; Distinctive and Convincing Style—a highly developed quality of creativity and originality; and Source of Inspiration—a clear intent and vision.

The 2012 judges were Betty Krulik, appraiser and private dealer in 19th and early 20th century American art, John Slavin, a professional conservator, and Doina Popescu, Director of the Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto Ontario. The judges were articulately poised when they released a statement on the piece:

“This work is a mature confident watercolour; the artist has complete mastery of the difficult medium, deftly applied, with confidence and maturity.  It is a Tour de Force, of watercolour technique, with a simple grace and beauty. The watercolour is beautifully placed on the page with graceful composition yet a dynamic energy. It seems effortless, but it is beautifully balanced. We were taken by the mysterious element, a fusion of ritualistic and organic. Ms Godet realized the mystery of the island, with subtlety. We loved the balance between the literal and the anthropomorphic, the gombey being unique to Bermuda. The dignity of the presentation engages the viewer, it is elegantly matted and framed.”

We would like to say thank you again to our sponsor John Charman, to our judges Betty Krulik, John Slavin, and Doina Popescu. Also we would like to thank Ray Charbonneau our installer for his hard work organizing the artwork and hanging the show. This years show was a great success!
