ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM INFORMATION

Founded in 1997 to invite artists from around the world to come to Bermuda and continue the tradition of our island serving as an unrivalled international artists’ colony.

Housed in the town of St. George's (UNESCO Heritage Site) in a Bermuda National Trust building apartment, 4 artists come to Bermuda each year for up to three months each, to work and share their artistic and cultural experiences with the children, adults and art community of Bermuda.  During the stay each artist conducts workshops of their own, host a slide show lecture, and where possible, contributes to the museum's other education programs and classes. At the end of the stay, each artist offers an exhibition of his/her work and makes a gift of an artwork to the Collection. This programme provides locals with valuable exposure to an outside artistic influence, which enriches our community and lends direct expertise to our Educational programme initiatives.

Masterworks' Artist in Residence Program has been introducing Bermuda to artists from a variety of different global geographical locations, from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Jamaica, Russia, Bulgaria, the West Indies, and Spain to name a few.

Further information on the program, including application materials, can be requested by email: artmworks@logic.bm, or by telephone: (441)-236-2950.

Masterworks Artist in Residence July - September 2010

Gustav Vermeulen from Pretoria, South Africa

Exhibit of Bermuda Works Opens on September 16

Reception from 5:30 - 7:00PM

At the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art

website: http://www.art.co.za/gustavvermeulen/default.htm

Masterworks' current Artist in Residence, Gustav Vermeulen, hails from Pretoria, South Africa.  Educated at the University of Pretoria in Fine Arts, Gustav is currently the Academic Head and Lecturer in Drawing and Illustration at The Open Window School of Visual Communication in Pretoria.

Gustav's artistic practice focuses in the production of paintings, drawings, and mixed media works.  Subject matter emcompassed in his recent artwork are representational landscapes with abstracted geometric forms within, and detailed drawings of ships, shipyards, and scaffold-like structural builds situated within landscape scenes.

Gustav writes about his work, "The landscape, actual or imaginary, is perhaps one of the strongest and most universal cultural metaphors.  For this reason I choose primarily to investigate the landscape in my art.  As a painter and draughtsperson, I am concerned with creating spaces that meander between the real and imaginary world and between the physically possible, and the mentally constructed world...I frequently make use of symbolism to reveal the nature of a specific landscape.  These symbols make reference to nature and history, the scars it bears and what it comest to represent to its people, hinting at its ever changing role in our lives.  Through the landscape I explore socio-political environments, cultural influences and physical beauty.  This approach means that these multi-layered and extremely detailed drawings often become 'living' spaces that provide a a tangible space within which to explore our own nature."

Gustav writes on Bermuda, "As a painter I was immediately struck by how the light in Bermuda differs from that of Africa.  I was particularly interested by its melodic quality, its subtlety compared to the severe and often stark lighting conditions encountered in the African landscape.  I also found the history of the island intriguiing.  Its unique architecture, the town planning and the tropical character of the island provided much inspiration.  On my return to South Africa I immediately committed my impressions to canvas and successfully exhibited those works.  The recreation of those memories from photographic imagery was however somewhat frustrating.  I feel the only way to do justice to the staggering subtleties and nuances of the land will be to paint the Bermudian landscape."

Masterworks Artist in Residence January - March 2010

Barbara Russell aka. "Ms. B the Doodle Queen"

from New York City

Exhibit of Bermuda Artworks from March 26 - April 2, 2010

At the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art

website: www.msbthedoodlequeen.com

Artist in Residence from New York City, Barbara Russell, aka. Ms. "B" the Doodle Queen, makes art in a style similar to internationally renowned artist Cy Twombly.  She writes, "Working freely in a sun enriched island enables me to draw freehand, experimenting with watercolor and acrylic paints intertwining poetry to develop short children stories with green living themes in a "Bardoodle" manner."

Barbara has participated in many group shows in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Harlem, and has work experience at the Harlem Arts Alliance, the Tribeca Film Festival, and the African American Women in Cinema Film Festival.

Artist in Residence Barbara Russell presided as one of three judges in the 2010 Charman Prize competition.

Barbara's exhibit opened on March 26, from 5:30 -7:00PM and ran until April 2.  In the exhibit she featured a video installation of abstract photographs taken of views from the Bermuda public buses projected in a viewing booth constructed from loaned bus parts such as a bus seating bench, steering wheel, license plate, and exterior siding courtesy of the Bermuda Department of Public Transport.  Barbara exhibited numerous doodle-paintings, including a moped helmet covered in doodle-designs.  Her artwork-on-paper subject matter included Bermuda Gombey dancers, Island flora, and social locales.  In the exhibit a booth was constructed for guests to do their own doodles, with photography and collages made from participant drawings from Barbara's "Doodle To The Beat" sessions at the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge open mic performances on Court Street.  Masterworks celebrated Barbara's birthday at the exhibit opening, and many guests made doodles to wish Barbara a happy birthday!

Masterworks Artist in Residence - October - December 2009

Adrian Baker from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

website: www.adrianbakerart.com

Adrian Baker is an artist from Toronto who paints in acrylic on canvas in a magical realist style.  She focused on large figurative works in Bermuda, as she deepened that interest from her studies in Ottawa.  Featured in numerous Canadian exhibits as well as international collections, Adrian’s work is intricate in detail, revealing more than meets the eye.

Adrian says about her time in Bermuda, “After spending a week in Bermuda touring the island, the first impression I have is that of light and colour. I find myself drawn to the high contrasts: the strong light and dark shadows on foliage, dark coral rock against smooth pink sand, the clean graphic lines of shadows on buildings. Perhaps due to the quality of light, the colours here seem more vivid, in fact there are colours here that I’ve rarely seen at home in Canada, and I’ll be adding new colours to my palette for my work here."  Adrian continues, "The other aspect of Bermuda that has made a strong impression is, of course, the people. Bermudians I’ve met have been open, friendly, and never too rushed to answer a question or share a story. As a figurative and portrait painter, I’m hoping to find local people to sit for me, particularly older folks, whose faces seem to tell a story about Bermuda.”
